Do you know the power of kindness?
From a young age, Tayyaba’s parents wondered why she couldn’t hear or speak. Doctors at The Aga Khan University Hospital discovered she had severe hearing loss. A cochlear implant could change her life, but the cost was beyond her family’s reach.
Thanks to your generosity to The Patients’ Behbud Society for AKUH, Tayyaba received this life-changing opportunity. Today, she hears, speaks, and experiences the world around her.
Tayyaba is just one of many lives touched by your support. Every day, critically ill patients require treatment that can mean the difference between life and death. Your Zakat, Sadaqah, and donations give them hope for a brighter future.
That is the power of your kindness.

Do You Know How Your Zakat is Changing Lives?

All zakat and donations received at PBS for AKUH are spent entirely on patient treatments. No amount from this pool of funds is spent on administrative expenses. PBS for AKUH has a transparent and audited welfare process. Its financial statements are published annually and audited by recognized accounting firms. PBS for AKUH is also shariah compliant in the disbursement of zakat funds.

Please donate your zakat and sadaqat to The Patients’ Behbud Society for AKUH to bring quality healthcare to the underprivileged.

Main areas of specialization:

Paediatrics

Paediatric care is among the most sought-after services offered at AKUH. Each year, more than 36,000 children are treated in the Paediatric Emergency Care Unit. In addition, our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the most advanced neonatal ICU in Pakistan, is equipped with 24 beds and provides round-the-clock care and monitoring for our youngest patients, whose families bring them here for treatment not only from across the country but from the UAE, Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia.

In 2018, the Patient Welfare Programme provided PKR 424 million for the treatment of children from low-income families. Thanks to PWP, we can treat all paediatric patients, regardless of their socioeconomic status.

Orthopaedics

The Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine services at AKUH provide state-of-the-art care for patients with orthopaedic and rheumatic conditions. Patients have access to all the necessary diagnostic tools, from high-quality laboratory tests to X-rays to MRI scans, all under one roof. Our surgeons are fellowship-trained and offer cutting-edge surgical expertise in trauma, joint replacement, foot and ankle injuries, arthroscopy, sports medicine, paediatric surgery, oncology, spine surgery, and more.

For patients from low-income families, our Patient Welfare Programme ensures that they get the care they need to live healthy and productive lives.

“I was working as a driver and I had pain in my knees, which led to advanced arthritis. I did not have the option to give up my job and stay at home–I had to get treatment for it. The Patient Welfare department was very helpful and supportive, which was a big relief for me. Anyone, even those who are financially disadvantaged, can come to AKUH for treatment, ” shared a patient, Patrick Victor.

Mind and Brain

At AKUH, our doctors and nurses offer cutting-edge, specialised care to treat a wide range of neurological conditions. The Hospital’s Epilepsy Programme is the first of its kind in the country, with a state-of-the-art technology that detects abnormalities related to the electrical activity of the brain. We also established the first stroke unit in Pakistan, offering weekly stroke clinics using a multidisciplinary approach. And AKUH was the first institution outside of North America to perform an awake craniotomy using a neuro-robotic exoscope, which enhances surgical precision and shortens the patient’s recovery time.
Thanks to the Patient Welfare Programme, no qualified patient is denied access to these life-saving services.

The Head Nurse shared, “The Patient’s Behbud Society has helped many of my needy patients. Giving zakat and other donations to families from low-income backgrounds helps to minimise their financial burden and fulfils their need for healthcare treatments.”

Oncology

AKUH’s Oncology Services offer interdisciplinary and comprehensive care, from chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and bone marrow transplants to a range of support groups to help meet patients’ emotional needs. In addition, the Cancer Centre offers the only home-based palliative care service in Pakistan, with the aim of treating everyone with the dignity and compassion they deserve.

In 2020, the Oncology team handled more than 7,600 patient visits. The Patient Welfare Programme covered more than PKR 155,000,000 of the cost for qualifying individuals.
“Many people think that AKUH is inaccessible to the masses. This is simply not true. We have patients coming from the remotest of areas of Pakistan, many of whom do not have the ability to pay for their treatment. Our welfare department is robust, and we assist all those who have a financial need,” explained Dr. Abida K Sattar, Section Head, Breast Surgery, AKUH

Heart and Lungs

AKUH offers multiple medical specialties all under one roof. This enables our doctors in Heart, Lung, and Vascular Services to work closely with doctors in other departments to ensure a holistic approach and the most advanced treatment available in Pakistan. Our cardiac services include a full range of prevention and diagnostic tools and interventions, making it the largest centre of its kind in the region. And our Pulmonary and Critical Care Services are equipped to handle a wide range of pulmonary disorders, from the simplest outpatient procedure to the most complex critical care.
