Core Programs and Services

Rahat Kada Hospice — A Beacon of Hope for End-of-Life Care in Pakistan

Rahat Kada Hospice, a project of The Medical Aid Foundation, stands as Pakistan’s first dedicated hospice facility, established in 1991 by the late Dr. Saira Khan. For more than three decades, Rahat Kada has remained a sanctuary of compassion, providing dignified, holistic, and completely free-of-cost end-of-life care to underserved patients battling incurable cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

In a country where the burden of cancer continues to rise and late diagnoses remain alarmingly common, countless patients exhaust curative treatment options or arrive at tertiary hospitals when time is no longer on their side. For such individuals and their families, Rahat Kada becomes a final refuge — a place where suffering is eased, dignity is preserved, and humanity takes precedence over illness.

Our multidisciplinary team of trained physicians, nurses, counsellors, and carers delivers comprehensive palliative care that addresses not only physical pain but also emotional, psychological, and spiritual distress. Patients in their final weeks and months of life receive compassionate symptom management, nutritional and medication support, counselling, and bereavement care, ensuring they spend their remaining days in comfort, peace, and respect.

Rahat Kada welcomes patients from government hospitals and underserved communities across Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Many travel long distances to Karachi seeking hope, only to discover that curative treatment is no longer possible. At Rahat Kada, we ensure that even when cure is not an option, care always is.

What Makes Our Approach Distinct

Rahat Kada’s model is unique in its integration of compassionate hospice care with sustainability and community ownership. We combine clinical palliative services with psychosocial, nutritional, and family support under one roof — ensuring holistic end-of-life care. Our approach emphasizes free-of-cost access, donor-supported sustainability, and partnerships with hospitals and community networks for referrals and continuity. By training caregivers and engaging families in care pathways, we build local capacity while preserving dignity, comfort, and quality of life for patients beyond curative treatment.

Impact Story

A young patient from a remote district of Balochistan was referred to Rahat Kada with advanced-stage cancer. The family had travelled long distances seeking treatment but had exhausted their financial resources. The patient was in severe pain, malnourished, and emotionally withdrawn, while caregivers were overwhelmed and unsupported.

At Rahat Kada, the patient received holistic palliative care — including pain and symptom management, nutritional support, psychological counselling, and a dignified hospice environment. The care team also guided the family on home-based comfort practices and emotional coping.

Over time, the patient’s pain was controlled, nutritional status improved, and emotional wellbeing stabilized. Most importantly, the patient was able to spend final days in comfort and dignity, surrounded by family rather than in distress.
