Special Children’s Educational Institute Trust (SCEI-257-VII) a Not for Profit Institute, is an academic and developmental school for children with intellectual disabilities, autism and secondary disabilities. Our objective is to provide these children with day to day operational training with a tailor made educational program that can help them conduct their everyday lives with as little assistance as possible. The program at SCEI provides functional academics, daily living skills, adaptive physical education, developmental art therapy, computer skills and vocational training.
Over the last 23 years we have established ourselves as a Model School for Special Children by maintaining a student/teacher ratio of 3:1, creating a holistic curriculum inclusive of all therapies, IEPs as well as transitioning our students into a Vocational Adult Program.
The School:
SCEI is a dynamic community of teachers and students which shares a commitment to improving the lives of children with special needs. Special education is a severely neglected sphere of child development and learning in Pakistan. Initiatives in this field have lacked both in quantity and quality. However, since its establishment in SCEI has successfully dedicated itself to the cause of serving children and their families who deal with a wide range of development delays including cognitive, communication, social, adaptive behavior, and/or motor skills. This goal is achieved primarily through the training of competent teachers and providing generous opportunities for the students to play and learn alongside one another. Students of SCEI have the benefit of personalized attention from their teacher(s). Furthermore, their curriculum is carefully designed and tailored to meet their individual requirements/needs (IEPs or Individualized Education Programs). Their learning opportunities are diverse and encourage the development of many skills through lots of multi-sensory experiences. SCEI boasts small classes, a high teacher to student ratio, and an extremely dedicated staff.
The Therapies
Physiotherapy, occupational and speech therapy programs are interwoven into each day at SCEI. All students receive extensive therapy from certified therapists who work closely with teachers and parents to insure therapies are working to help individuals be as functional as possible.
The Vocational Center
SCEI has implemented a program in which skill based training is provided to students who have reached their academic plateau. The goal is to create products that may be sellable to the community and will in return bring funds into the VC to enhance the program and keep special needs adults gainfully employed to lesson the financial burden on society.
Creating Awareness:
Our organization’s objective is to address people’s attitude towards physically and mentally disabled individuals by educating society and increasing acceptance, tolerance and appreciation of persons with disabilities as invaluable members of society.
By inviting media to our Annual Events such as World Autism Day and UN International Day for Persons with Disabilities we have brought much needed national and international exposure to persons with disabilities in a culture where they are extremely marginalized.
Financial situation:
SCEI is committed to providing special education to those who will benefit from our program from all economic sectors therefore our admission process is needs blind. Our annual income is derived from donations and sale of our Vocational products and Zakat. This therefore remains a challenge for us, as a major part of our financial support is through our ongoing efforts of fundraising.
On an annual basis, the school’s accounts are audited by a reputed firm of Chartered Accountants, and we are also registered with the Tax authorities.
