Story of Shazia

A resident of Lyaari, 30 years old Shazia Asghar (not booked at LDH) was brought to The Lady Dufferin Hospital’s emergency in a near to death condition. Sadly, the 30 weeks pregnant had lost her baby as she upon arrival told us that the hospital she had booked herself into had declared IUD, (Intra Uterine Death of the baby). The task was to save this mother of three young children who was to be delivered but due to extremely low platelets that had dropped to 25000 she needed blood transfusion. Before arriving to LDH she had been turned down by many hospitals as she had had a miscarriage already, was bleeding heavily due to ruptured placenta and kidneys nearing failure. Her Bp was very high, was having seizures and finally collapsed upon arriving to LDH.

This was an acute emergency and Shazia needed to be operated but that could be done only after arranging blood for her transfusion. Due to prevailing Dengue virus in the city there is shortage of blood and after being refused by various blood banks and hospitals the LDH doctors decided to donate their blood to save this dying mother’s life as waiting for an hour or two was life threatening for her. LDH staff however managed to arrange screened blood donated by SIUT and the LDH team of senior doctors and nurses then performed Shazia’s c-section along with blood transfusion and her life was saved.

Shazia is still in ICU and she and her husband were in tears upon thanking LDH staff and doctors for giving her a new life.

‘It’s a miracle I’m alive. I was in so much pain that I thought I would die and the only thing

on my mind was, who would care for my children when I won’t be there.

I will pray for you all till my last breath for giving me a new life.”-
